LTT3 — Green Education Journey: Testing and Evolution of Innovative Materials

Hosted by Grunnskóli Húnaþings vestra & The Icelandic Seal Centre

The final mobility at Grunnskóli Húnaþings vestra combined international collaboration, game-based learning and Icelandic field trips to validate the classroom-tested materials. Students’ self-rated understanding of climate change rose from about 2 to about 4 on a 1–5 scale, and the week mapped onto UN Sustainable Development Goals 4, 12, 13 and 17.

Highlights

  • Climate Summit role-play — students negotiated as different countries

  • Field trips to Blönduvirkjun hydro station, Kolugljúfur canyon, Reykir Regional Museum and the Vatnsnes seal coast

Daily programme

Day 1 — Mon 15 Sep 2025

  • Welcome and breakfast at the school
  • Pre-test
  • Icebreaker games and gym sports
  • Contribution from the Spanish team
  • Guided walk through Hvammstangi (local culture and history)

Day 2 — Tue 16 Sep

  • Interactive workshops led by the Turkish team (morning)
  • Afternoon: visits to Blönduvirkjun Hydropower Plant, Kolugljúfur Canyon and the Regional Museum at Reykir
  • Linked renewable energy and cultural heritage to climate education

Day 3 — Wed 17 Sep

  • Students prepared posters for the end-of-week seminar
  • Workshop at the Icelandic Seal Centre on eco-certification and sustainable practices
  • Optional excursion to Vatnsnes Peninsula — Icelandic horses, fishing traditions and seal habitats

Day 4 — Thu 18 Sep

  • German, Icelandic, Danish and Spanish teams each delivered workshops on sustainability
  • Role-play activities and creative projects
  • Sports and leisure — disc golf and swimming
  • Reception at Hlaðan (adults)
  • Optional movie night at the Seal Center

Day 5 — Fri 19 Sep

  • Seminar on biodiversity
  • Musical performances
  • Youth panel discussion
  • Student poster presentations
  • Post-test
  • Farewell ceremony with group photos and certificates
  • Closing seminar for adults at the Seal Center; departure to Reykjavík

Delivered beyond the plan

Extra work carried out on top of the original application-form scope.

  • Climate Summit Roleplay and a climate “Treasure Hunt” added as signature project-based learning activities
  • Local institutions engaged beyond the consortium: Icelandic Seal Centre, Regional Museum at Reykir and Blönduvirkjun Hydropower Plant
  • Pre- and post-evaluation surveys and a full written evaluation report produced

Measured outcomes

  • Students’ self-rated understanding of climate change rose from ≈2 to ≈4 on a 1–5 scale
  • Students reported intended behaviour change — less plastic, saving energy
  • Teachers reported stronger belief in game-based learning as a classroom method
